Social Psych... it's real life

Magic

 Compliance:

When a magician performs some sort of mentalism, such as guessing a word a spectator is thinking of, they rely on the information that the spectator willingly gives them. Compliance is the changing of behavior at the request of a person. The spectator complies with the magician's request for bits of information about themselves, which is what the magician uses to perform their effects.

Obedience:

When a magician tells a spectator to pick a card, the spectator obeys the magician to do so. Obedience is the changing of behavior based on the direct command of an authority figure. In this scenario, the magician is an authority figure telling the spectator to pick a card, and the spectator obeys for the effect to continue.

Social Facilitation:

Social Facilitation is when one's task has better performance when there are more people watching. When magicians perform on stage, they are likely to have better performances because there are more people watching their act, so they feel more confident and energized to put on a better show.

Group Polarization:

Group Polarization is the idea that people in groups tend to make more extreme decisions than what they actually believe. If Copperfield asks a group of spectators whether or not he should make the Statue of Liberty disappear, the crowd is more likely to say yes.

Reciprocity Norms:

Reciprocity norms are the standard that people who help others are reciprocated in equal payment or benefits. After a magician performs on a stage, they expect to be reciprocated in money from the show for putting on an entertaining performance for the crowd.
